Al Leads was named after a member of Team DeMoura who often led the Team on this run past his house. Leading the pack is now difficult for him due to a diet of Twinkies. This runner is also a renowned creator of illicit shortcuts, which he takes at every opportunity. He has an impressive ability to create shortcuts by going where no man has gone before. But back to the run. This is a pleasant run on paved roads through Moscow. There are no tough hills on this run. It does include the Public Avenue megahill, but you run down it and not up. It is a favorite in summer because of the big shade trees along half of the route and the drinking fountains in the parks. Al Leads is also popular in winter because there are no gravel roads to turn into mush. It also offers the opportunity to score a Double Flaunt (these are explained in the Polk 5 text). Route: Memorial Gym to Main Street, then up tree-lined Third Street through East City Park. Up Hayes St. to Rotary Park (with the water tower), then out Orchard to Public Avenue, which goes back down toward Main Street. Return on 6th Street to the University and back to Memorial Gym. |
