The Via Malodoroso Run takes you from Memorial Gym to an out-and-back run on the Chipman Trail, a paved trail between Moscow, Idaho and Pullman, Washington. You'll have company with all the other runners, cyclists, walkers and roller bladers who use this great trail. You are probably wondering about the etymology of Via Malodoroso. Well, even if you aren't, here's the story. For years there were a few brave runners who were adventurous enough to risk the wrath of the railroad tycoons by running out the partially abandoned railroad grade to Pullman. But being chased by railway agents wasn't nearly as perilous as getting caught in a shifting wind that on occasion would waft directly across the trail from the old fashioned, undersized Moscow sewage treatment plant. The smell was bad enough to gag a maggot--hence the name. Not to worry now, though. The trail is paved, the railway agents have receded into history, and the treatment plant has undergone a multi-million dollar upgrade. Enjoy your run! The white mileage markers on this map are one-way mile markers from the
gym, which are not identified on the trail. |
