Palouse Road Runners organized the Women’s Run/Walk for 13 years, but
will not be holding the event after 2004.
This fast or leisurely 5k (3.1 mile)
fun run/walk/roll starts and finishes at the new Hamilton Indoor
Recreation Center (HIRC), 1724 East F Street, in Moscow. Every year, we get about an equal number of
runners and walkers. Prize categories include prize drawings as well as the
usual age groupings. The race director is a woman, and men traditionally
assist by acting as course marshals, attending the water stops, working on
registration, preparing the post-race munchies and generally doing as they
are told. The weather is always perfect. (Would we dare have anything else?)
The course is flat and paved, and easy to negotiate with a stroller or
baby-jogger.
In May 2003, for the first time, we included a Women’s
Wellness Forum to encourage women and girls to become more active, eat
well, be safe, have fun, build friendships, etc.
In 2004, Moscow Mayor Marshall Comstock served as honorary starter.
Custom-designed prizes were awarded to overall winners in the open and
masters divisions and to the top three finishers in each of seven age
divisions.
The 2003 and 2004 events were part of the Women’s Wellness Forum,
featuring prize drawings, complimentary massages, commemorative T-shirts,
health-oriented exhibitors, vendors, and presentations. Major sponsors
included Gritman Medical Center, University of Idaho, the City of Moscow, and
Palouse Road Runners. Proceeds from the 2004 event went
toward purchasing playground equipment for Friendship Square in Moscow.
